Meet Green Recorder
Today, we would like you to welcome “Green Recorder”. A new desktop recorder for the Linux desktop. It was built using Python and GTK+ 3. And uses the ffmpeg library as its core. It supports recording in 5 different formats with options to set the frame rate or quality. The program is released under GPL 3.
Currently. it’s not that much. Just like any piece of software on its initial version (remember Linux 0.1?). But hopefully, more features are about to be added soon. Such as Wayland support and adjusting audio streams beside a lot more.
Check this demo on the new program:

Installation Of Green Recorder
To install Green Recorder on Ubuntu 16.04, 16.10 and 17.04:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mhsabbagh/greenproject sudo apt update sudo apt install green-recorder
To install it on Fedora 24/25:
sudo dnf copr enable mhsabbagh/greenproject sudo dnf install green-recorder
For the other Linux distributions, you may grab the source code from GitHub and build it yourself. Since the code is actually Python, you can simply run python setup.py install
after installing dependencies.
Things To Come
There are a lot of on-work features for the program like:
- Add support for recording on Wayland (GNOME Shell Wayland Session, it offers a screencast tool, can be used).
- Add a checking method to see if ffmpeg already working properly or not before launching the tray.
- Add more possible formats supported by ffmpeg.
- Support more options like including the mouse pointer, recording a specific area and choosing input audio stream.
- Terminal recording support using the command line.
- And even more!
