Green Recorder is a simple desktop recorder which we develop for Linux systems. It supports both Xorg and Wayland (GNOME session). It’s built using Python, GTK+ and ffmpeg. Released under GPL 3.

The new version includes the following set of updates:

  • GIF format support is now available. The image size is even optimized and is at least 10x better than the normal ffmpeg recording with GIF.
  • Added ability to choose the audio input source.
  • Preferences window was added to allow setting default values. You can now also edit the default Wayland pipeline from there beside a lot of other things.
  • Reorganized the code and made it much clearer and simpler.
  • Reorganized the graphical user interface.
  • Added play button to easily enable playing the recorded video. It depends on xdg-open.
  • Fixed a bug in recording video only or audio only on Wayland.
  • Created a better ffmpeg detection on Xorg.
  • Introduced a better detection method for the running display server, adding possibility to support other servers in the future with no problem.
  • Various fixes and edits everywhere.

Install Green Recorder 3.0

Ubuntu 16.04/16.10/17.04/17.10 or Linux Mint 18/18.1/18.2

Make sure you have enabled the multiverse and universe repositories before trying to install the program from the PPA (to be able to download the dependencies). You can install Green Recorder from the following PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossproject/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install green-recorder

You can grab the Debian packages directly from the PPA itself and install it on any Debian distribution. You mainly need the “green-recorder” package and “python-pydbus”. Other dependancies (like ffmpeg) are probably in Debian repositories:

Fedora 24/25/26/Rawhide

sudo dnf install green-recorder

Fedora 25:

Does OBS started supporting wayland? If so, this would be a good news. So far, this green recorder is one of the few which does support wayland, unless my info is outdated.
